How Did it Begin?

A chance encounter between an Italian composer and a Dutch writer: “Why don’t you write a song text for me?” The day after the text is ready, one day later the music too. The title is “Red”; the song describes the dramatic moment in which the painter Vincent van Gogh cuts off his ear in a fit of madness.“It’s a pity to leave that song apart.”

So the authors decide to write a musical around it. The ideal way to pass a hot Roman summer, kept at home by a foot operation and knee harm.

Then a stroke of luck: looking in the internet for a production they find the site of the Nederlands Musical Ensemble. Their director Ivo van Leeuwen is just looking for an interesting new work for his talented group. After a first contact they hit it off at once. In  2005 Vincent the Musical has six performances in various theatres in Holland, uniting Dutch and Italian talents in the name of the most cosmopolite painter, the great Vincent van Gogh.
